EU renews priority status for Project Bifrost: Strengthening Denmark’s CO2 hub role

Copenhagen, 10 December 2025 – On 1 December 2025, the Bifrost Project in the Danish North Sea has once again been granted special European status as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission.

This renewed recognition confirms the project’s critical role in making Denmark a leading CO₂ storage hub and advancing Europe’s climate-neutral ambitions by 2050.

The PCI statuses are updated biennially, and Project Bifrost’s inclusion for another term underscores its continued importance in the European energy transition. As before, this designation provides significant benefits, including streamlined permitting processes and eligibility to apply for EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility program. To qualify, projects must demonstrate cross-border impact, strengthen energy market integration, enhance competition, and contribute to the EU’s climate and energy goals.

“The renewal of PCI status is a strong signal from the EU that Project Bifrost remains a cornerstone of Europe’s carbon capture and storage strategy,” says Martin Rune Pedersen, Country Chair at TotalEnergies Denmark. “It reinforces our commitment to building large-scale CO₂ storage infrastructure in the Danish North Sea and accelerating the decarbonization of heavy industry across Europe.”

As the coordinating promoter of the Bifrost Project, TotalEnergies continues to unite partners across the CCS value chain, aiming to develop robust transportation and storage solutions, mitigate risks, and foster partnerships with emitters and industrial clusters in Denmark and neighboring countries. Denmark’s unique geological conditions and infrastructure make it an ideal environment for permanent CO₂ storage, supporting EU energy security and climate objectives.

The renewed PCI status ensures that Project Bifrost remains at the forefront of Europe’s efforts to scale carbon capture and storage, paving the way for the energy transition.
